The Pigs and IIITians

The pigs have a very important place in the imagination of Human race.

Remember the pig was one of the Dasavtars.

One of my favourite books is Animal Farm by George Orwell. He wrote the book as communism was on the rise. The story is about an Animal farm. The animals revolt and throw the owner out. They run their own farm which is supposed to be sans exploitation. The leaders are the pigs. The pigs slowly start ruling the farm and start enjoying all the good things which comes at the cost of other animals. It also runs a KGB style intelligence apparatus to keep the animals in check. The finale involves pigs wearing ties and learning to walk like human beings. In Orwell's mind, the Pig is the animal which comes closest to human beings.

Pigs are staple diet for majority of human beings. The pork, ham and other variations are favourite dishes for a lot of people. The Muslims and Hindus do not eat them because they are thought to be dirty.

When I was watching Chillar Party, one the characters was saving money in a Piggy Bank. What does pigs have to do with banks and money? The idea of saving starts with piggy banks for children.

In Bengal, a favourite expletive is Suarer Bachha (son of a pig). The interpretation of a Pig is a low form of animal. Son of a Pig is worse than son of a bitch which will make one a dog.

I am reminded of a story where a man and a pig get into a fight. The man was appearing to be winning. In the process of fight, they get into a ditch with smelly, filthy dung. The smell was atrocious. The man suddenly saw that the pig was enjoying the fight. It was feeling very comfortable in the environment. The outcome was clear: the pig won.

Where are the IIITans in this blog.

Last few months, I am noticing a lot of garbage in the campus. Much of it is solid waste which is a result of construction. A lot of it is plastic waste thrown around by students. In the hostel, below the windows one can see plastic wrappers of pepsi, kurkure, lays, fruti, emply plastic cups of coffee and tea, plastic bags. When I discussed about this with some students, they seemed to be oblivious to such garbage. Our own cleaning staff clean the corridors but feel quite comfortable with the stewn garbage.

Have we become the pig feeling very comfortable in the filthy environment? I hope not!

To maintain cleanness of the campus, I should rather suggest there should be permanent road around Academic and hostel blocks for proper demarcation along with plantations. By doing it campus will look excellent.

In addition to Dustbins should be at appropriate places around the campus.

There should be awareness among the students and staffs about “ No to use Plastic Bags”.

With due respect to your comment and concern for the cleanliness of the campus, I would like to gracefully differ with you Sir, because I have the feeling that your concern is slightly misplaced. But as far as the end-effect is concerned I totally converge with you. Had I observed the college hygiene in general and hostel hygiene in particular before August 1 then I might have held a different opinion but Sir, August 7 is too late to sustain that and hence I too will agree with you that we have indeed become pigs but unlike other pigs we don't enjoy the same!......That you are personally concerned about the hygiene of the institute is highly commendable but if I am not wrong then the sudden upsurge in the filth in the past few days is the culprit that forced you to unleash this 'post' that you had kept bridled for the past few months. 'Closer-our-home-to-Rly.Stn.-more-is-the-chance-we-miss-the-train' syndrome is what we have tend to follow. As long as we think the litter population gonna shoot up we remain vigil that it doesn't... but the moment we think there are few to cause litter we end up in a mess.. The hostels are provided with dustbins in every block in every floor but ever since the holidays were declared till September 7,they are never thought of being emptied. They are simply left to overflow. When the hostel remains occupied cleaning staff have their work cut-out at every regular intervals. And during this vacation I hardly remember when did they last discharge their duties. The bathroom conditions are stinky but we manage to disinfect it, locally though, before we use it. The corridors might be having dust more than the dunes. We take the moral responsibility of causing a major chunk of the litter but we are hardly left with any other option.. So, as you say, sorrowfully we have indeed become pigs... but we don't feel comfortable about it....

I like the way aditya has expressed his emotions over the issue. Please join your Director in keeping the premises including bathrooms and your own rooms clean. There can not be two opinion about the need to maintain highest standarrd of hygiene everywhere

I agree with Sangram and Well wisher in some extent.. See they are the future of the institute. if u not provide the minimum necessities of the students, how do you expect the best result?

So What I want to suggest to create a monitoring cell under a professionals(like JE or AE)under direct control of Director or Dean. Try to addressed the problems of the students as soon as possible.

Ask for more fund from the Govt. Visit the reputed companies and get their assistance. It should be give and take method. Otherwise the institute may not reach its goal, what I doubt...

Lastly I hope the students should try their best efforts to achive the goal and make the institute proud, in spite all the odds they are facing now..

Cleanliness is a state of mind. If we are habituated to live like Pigs at home...then no one can help in this matter. Its easy to point fingers at the institute, but even if the institute provides all the services..the scenario will not change, if we have the habit of a Pig.

With all due regards sirs,i agree to the conception of IIITians as the culprits,of having littered the campus. But sir,if i am right,Snowball had taken an attempt to modernize the farm, even being fatally injured during human confrontations'.Similar is the case over here sir, there are a select few among us who are mischief mongers("Napoleans"),the others always tend to use the hostel bins. And partly it is the fault of the colleges' maintenance staff, because they should remind such students of their contribution to the overall hygiene of the campus,Such students take advantage of the meek nature of the staff. But sir, true to my word, the better lot among us are disciplined and have a sense of good hygiene.
